Technical & Design Director

Reporting to:

Managing Director

Purpose of job/basic function:

To lead the Technical and Design functions of the business, ensuring all activities are compliant with the Building Safety Act 2022 and associated regulations. The Technical Director will be responsible for embedding a culture of safety, competence, and continuous improvement across all technical operations, ensuring façade systems are designed, delivered, and maintained to the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy
• Lead and develop the Technical and Design teams, fostering a culture of competence, accountability and collaboration.

• Define and oversee the technical scope of works, ensuring alignment with statutory duties under the Building Safety Act.

• Develop and implement strategic plans to improve technical delivery, innovation, and compliance.

Compliance & Safety
• Ensure all technical outputs meet the requirements of the Building Safety Act, Building Regulations and CDM 2015.

• Maintain and manage the “Golden Thread” of building safety information throughout the lifecycle of each project.

• Support the Building Safety Regulator’s oversight by ensuring all staff and subcontractors demonstrate appropriate skills, knowledge, experience, and behaviours (SKSB).

Design & Technical Oversight
• Oversee façade system design to ensure robustness, cost-effectiveness, and programme alignment.

• Investigate and implement the latest façade technologies and compliance strategies.

• Monitor internal and external design resources to ensure capacity and capability meet project demands.

Stakeholder Engagement
• Liaise with senior management, clients, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to ensure transparent communication and collaborative problem-solving.

• Prepare and present technical reports to the Board, including risk assessments and compliance updates.

Quality & Continuous Improvement
• Ensure adherence to ISO 9001 and BS 99001 and company quality control processes.

• Identify and resolve non-conformance issues, ensuring corrective actions are documented and implemented.

• Promote continuous professional development (CPD) and technical training across the department.

Skills, Knowledge, Experience & Behaviours (SKEB)

Skills
• Advanced technical knowledge of façade systems and construction methodologies.

• Strong leadership, team management capabilities and commercial adept.

• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Knowledge
• In-depth understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022, Building Regulations, and CDM 2015.

• Awareness of BIM and digital record-keeping for the Golden Thread.

Experience
• Proven track record in senior technical leadership within the façade industry.

• Extensive technical facades systems knowledge is essential.

• Experience managing complex design and technical teams on high-value projects.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver compliant, safe, and efficient technical solutions.

• The ability to manage and lead employees under your control.

Qualifications & Requirements
• Degree or equivalent in Construction, or Façade Technology.

• Evidence of ongoing CPD and competence assessments.

• Full clean UK driving licence.

• Act as a company ambassador, promoting values and culture.

• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability policies.
