Sustainability Open Day 2010

In June 2010 Alumet hosted a Sustainability Open Day at their Southam headquarters. Dr David Bellamy OBE was the company's special guest. The day included the following events:

Sustainability showcase - Alumet showcased their recent developments in the area of sustainability, which include gaining ISO 14001 and receiving the Green Apple Award for Environmental Excellence. Councillor Bertie MacKay (Chairman of Warwick District Council) presented the ISO14001 certificate to Alumet's Environmental Manager Lee Summers, whilst David Bellamy presenting the coveted Green Apple award to Managing Director Gary Summers.

Alumet's recent environmental commitments don't end there - the company has committed locally to sponsoring flowers around the town via the 'Southam in Bloom' scheme as well as on a worldwide scale by sponsoring 5,000 trees in the Amazon rainforest! This will enable the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to protect these trees from illegal logging, and help to save the millions of unique species in the forest that are under threat.

Sustainability market - Over 20 stalls including market leaders such as Schuco and Comar displayed the latest in renewable technologies. Local producers also showcased a range of local food and drink.

Garden opening - Alumet recently installed a new garden at their headquarters for staff to enjoy during breaks. TV botanist Dr. David Bellamy OBE officially opened the new 'Green Vision' garden and took questions from guests.

Fundraising - Money was raised throughout the day for Motor Neurone Disease Association with a charity book stall, tombola, food & drinks and donations from stall holders. A total of £800 was raised during the afternoon alone.

Special guests - As well as Councillor Bertie MacKay and Dr David Bellamy OBE, Alumet were also joined by the Sir William Lawrence Bt (Chairman of Stratford-On-Avon District Council), Lady Tamara Lawrence, Councillor Andy Crump (Deputy Major of Southam) and Lord & Lady Kilmaine.

Director Dean Walton commented "The Sustainability Open Day was the result of an enormous team effort. It was fantastic to be able to showcase the various renewable technologies that the company is investing in such as photovoltaic panels and solar shading. It was also a great way of getting the local community involved and raising a lot of money for charity at the same time".
